Halloween Treats

I love fall! We are having gorgeous fall ish weather here. Well, I'm not sure if it qualifies as fall really, I haven't noticed a big change in the foliage here, but it is pretty brisk in the morning and at night. Nevertheless, to welcome the changing of the seasons I decided to make a batch of Sugar Cookies. And, I am proud to say, they turned about wonderfully! Here is my recipe for a successful batch of Sugar Cookies.
Step 1: Find a handsome man to do all the dirty work for you. If he thinks you may have made the dough wrong, don't listen to him and tell him to keep adding flour until it until it doesn't stick to his hands, counter and everything else in it's path.
Step 2: (Gloat to yourself for a minute about being right about adding more flour, then move on.) Roll out your delightfully floury dough to about 1/4 in. thick. Don't have a rolling pin? Don't worry! Large glass jars work nicely too.
Step 3: Using the cookie cutters you bought at Target for 4 for $1.00, cut out the shapes of your preference. We used witch hats, ghosts, pumpkins and half moons.
Step 4: Lay your preferred shapes on a slightly greased, freshly bought, cookie sheet. If you get a little wild with PAM don't worry, you're cookies will turn out just fine.
Step 5: Bake for 6-9 minutes. But usually just 6...unless you didn't follow the directions on step 2 and you made them too thick...then maybe 9. But what I'm trying to say is, make your frosting while you're waiting for the cookies to bake. Since pumpkins can't be the same color as ghosts, separate your frosting into different bowls and add the color of your choice to each.Step 6: Admire all your hard work, and pour a tall glass of milk since you know you'll eat one or two...or possibly three...before you get them all frosted.
Step 6: Get creative with the candy corn crumbs you have left and the other colors of frosting. It's also important that you have a good laugh about your best decorating efforts that have gone horribly awry. (Can you spy the impromptu Family Home Evening lesson in this picture?)
Step 7: Take some cookies to the neighbors in a shoe box. If you happen to have some paper plates on hand though, that would probably be better. All good things were meant to be shared!
Step 8: Enjoy the remaining cookies for only a couple of days, because they will most certainly not last longer than that before they are devoured.
*Tip: Adding Pumpkin Spice to your cookie dough is delicious and very festive. Or, if you only want to add it to the last 4 and get addicted then it gives you a good excuse to make more!
Now go on, make yourself and your neighbors some Sugar Cookies and have a Happy Fall!!

  4. I used a tall drinking glass as a rolling pin for years. But never used a shoe box to take cookies to the neighbors. Good idea though. I'm glad you made friends with your neighbors.
