I'm crafty, like MacGyver

We don't have Cable, and to be honest, I really don't miss it. The only thing we miss are Modern Family (But we get it on Hulu, so we don't really miss it) the news (but we also get this online), National Geographic (really wish I could watch Expedition Week!) and Brad misses Sports...but our friends usually invite us over for the important games. So, instead of having TV, we have Netflix, which we actually really like. We go through phases, and when we find a show that we like, we'll watch every episode of every season until we've seen it all and have to move on to another show. It's kind of ridiculous sometimes. We also went through a documentary phase, which was very educational. But today Brad added MacGyver to our Queue, and I kid you not, there are 137 episodes! I remember my Dad watching it and laughing, and I've heard tons of MacGyver references, and I think MacGruber on SNL is funny, but I had noooooo idea. In fact, it's playing right now as I type. And he literally just said, "Whoever said life is like a bowl of Cherries was wrong. Life is like a bowl of Hungarian Goulash, hot and sticky...and I'm not hungry." Oh man, really? Really? So. Stinking. Hilarious. We just sit and laugh! But let's look at what we can learn from MacGyver:

1. He is never in a hurry. I plan to tell Brad this the next time he tells me to hurry up. I've been telling him what my Ukrainian friend told me, "A real lady is never in a hurry." But he doesn't think it's funny, I think he'll respond much better to the MacGyver reference.

2. He has a heart of Gold. In the three episodes I've seen so far he has always taken the time out of his busy schedule of diffusing bombs and saving the world to hug a small, crying child. Every episode! So the next time you're busy rescuing a small country from the grasp of a tyrant ruler (so maybe you're really just grocery shopping) remember to help individuals around you.

3. He can make ANYTHING from a tube sock, a stick of gum, and a paperclip. Really, he can! Today he saved an entire factory from explosion by gumming up the leak with chocolate. I forgot how, but he did. So, learn a new skill. I intend to learn to make bread from scratch like a PRO, and maybe, just maybe, that skill will help me to save an entire city from a nuclear meltdown.

Thanks MacGyver!

Speaking of being crafty, I have a renewed love for sewing! My life goal is to actually make a fashionable piece of clothing for myself to wear. I'm a beginning quilter, and I just discovered the joy of sewing other things. Look, I know it's super simple, but I made my first tote this week, for my niece, and now I'm addicted. I'm going to make like 10 more and use them as reusable grocery bags. Cute, thrifty and green! So, for my Mom's sake and anyone else who's interested, this is what I made my niece. It's a little Baptism/Church Bag, but she can really use it however she wants. (Excuse the picture quality, they were taken with my phone at the post office right before I shipped it. My bad..)

The Bag: totally reversible! I know, I'm moving up in the sewing world.

The Towel: such a fun and easy project. I thought it turned out adorable! But good grief, I really need help sewing curves. The C is a little wonky..don't tell!

The other contents:

-Notebook to write whatever she so feels inclined to write. I pretty much always have one with me.
-Church books. Cute little books that teach what we believe, in an easy way for kids to understand. I did "We Believe" and "Book of Mormon Stories", and I figure that even if she already knows most of it, she can use them to tell her little brother and sister about it.
-Chapstick. Hello?! You can't have a purse and not carry chapstick in it.
-Gum. Goes in the same category as Chapstick.

I basically just looked at the things I have in my church bag and put them in her church bag. And, everything is handmade, except the gum and chapstick. Even the notebook was...until I messed it up. Then I ran out of time and just had to buy one. MacGyver would be ashamed.

Well, that was this week's craftiness. I'll let you know how my reusable grocery bags turn out. I'm starting to compile my Summer Bucket List already, and I think I need a good project to do. Any ideas?

  6. We also live a cableless life, and are addicted to Netflix, and watch MacGyver - haha. Being young and poor is awesome. That baptism bag is awesome, I'm very impressed. Can't wait to read your Summer Bucket List, I need some inspiration for summer things to look forward to!

  7. Oh my, your father wants me to tell you that Mr.T can make a helicopter out of a washing machine and lawn mower parts...so keep watching! Also, as a mother, I am so proud of your skills...too bad you didn't get any of them from me. Thanks Mrs. Barnum! What a cute bag! Have a great week, and a Happy Easter with your sister!

  8. We haven't had TV in our house going on 10 years and it was the best decision we could've ever made for our family. We do however watch dvd's. We have a new favorite series from the UK it's called Sherlock Holmes and they only have 3 episodes so far.
I love the bag! I'll have to make some out of African fabric.
